Anganwadi is a government-supported rural childcare center in India under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme. These centers provide nutrition, healthcare, early education, and maternal care to children under the age of 6, pregnant women, and lactating mothers.

Job Roles in Anganwadi

The Anganwadi system has different job roles, each with specific responsibilities. The four main posts in Anganwadi are:

1. Anganwadi Worker (AWW)
  • Role: Primary caregiver responsible for implementing ICDS schemes.
  • Duties: Providing nutrition & health education, Conducting pre-school activities for children (3-6 years).
  • Qualification: 10th or 12th pass (varies by state).
2. Anganwadi Helper (AWH)
  • Role: Assists the Anganwadi Worker in daily tasks.
  • Duties: Cooking and serving mid-day meals to children, Maintaining cleanliness in the Anganwadi center.
  • Qualification: 8th pass (varies by state).
3. Mini Anganwadi Worker (MAWW)
  • Role: Works in smaller villages where a full-fledged Anganwadi center is not required.
  • Duties: Performs all tasks of an AWW but on a smaller scale, Takes care of a limited number of children and mothers.
  • Qualification: 10th or 12th pass.
4. Anganwadi Supervisor
  • Role: Oversees multiple Anganwadi centers within a block or district.
  • Duties: Monitoring Anganwadi Workers and Helpers, Ensuring proper implementation of government schemes, Coordinating with health officials and local authorities.
  • Qualification: Graduation (degree in Social Work, Nutrition, or related field preferred).

Anganwadi program in Tamilnadu is a lifeline for rural communities, ensuring that children and mothers receive proper nutrition, education, and healthcare. The government continues to strengthen this system through modernization, digitization, and policy improvements. 

Tamil Nadu operates approximately 54,079 Anganwadi centers under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme. These centers are instrumental in providing essential services such as supplementary nutrition, non-formal pre-school education, and health-related services to children and mothers across the state.
